Tax benefits, increased productivity, and expanded services can all help offset the expenditures involved with adding certain equipment and technologies to your practice. Additionally, as Bettencourt noted, having a modern practice with all of the best available equipment at your fingertips can improve your professional image. Marketing your cutting-edge equipment and services along with word of mouth can help build your practice. But putting costs aside, we asked our readers in the 2007 Technology Census what technologies they would add to their practice if cost were not an issue. Forty percent indicated they would add digital radiography “if money were no issue.” Other popular choices included lasers, CEREC chairside CAD/CAM systems, and 3-D cone beam imaging systems. According to this latest survey, many of you plan to follow through and purchase some of this new equipment. Eleven percent of our readers plan to purchase digital x-ray systems in the next 12 months, while another 20% indicate plans to purchase this technology in the future. More than three in 10 GPs plan to purchase a soft-tissue laser either now or later, 15% might go with a cone beam imaging system in the future, and 1.4% look to add the technology within the year.
Enjoy your surroundings Finally, Dr. Blank recommends you set up your work area in a fashion that will enable you to work efficiently, stay healthy, and even enjoy your surroundings. “Dentistry is tough work. Designing a space that not only is ergonomic but beautiful in architectural design and furnishing literally makes going to work a highlight of your day,” he said. “Failure to consider ergonomics, range of motion, traffic patterns, and the overall patient experience will certainly add stress to those who work in the building day in and day out.” Stan Goff is a senior editor for Dental Products Report.
